2010: three

albums

---

Infinite Body - Carve Out the Face of My God (Post Present Medium)

Ceephax Acid Crew - United Acid Emirates (Planet Mu) and Psychtapolis EP (WéMè Records)

it's my list, count 'em both.

Owen Pallett - Heartland (Domino)

a concept album whose narrative and ideas seem to unfold more with each listen. smart and challenging while remaining utterly listenable.

The Radio Dept. - Clinging to a Scheme (Labrador)

who else engineers flawless pop tunes the way these swedes do? no one, that's who.

A Sunny Day In Glasgow - Autumn, Again (self-released)

available free (on purpose) for not much longer, go get it!

The Chap - Well Done Europe (Lo Recordings)

Abe Vigoda - Crush (Post Present Medium)

Grasslung - Sincere Void (Root Strata)

Captain Ahab - The Propagation of the Gospel in Foreign Parts (Cock Rock Disco)

also available for free, but indefinitely. The End of Irony, Captain Ahab's studio album from this year is not bad, but the energy on this live recording is pretty infectious, and has a lot of the same tracks as the proper album.

alright i think that does it. any favorites you care to share? please do.

2010: two

eps
---

Tennis - Baltimore (Underwater Peoples)

Balam Acab - See Birds (Tri Angle)

the only exponent of this whole drag / witch house thing that is actually musically interesting (Salem can jump in a ditch. there, i said it.).

Pale Blue Sky - Shades of Grey (Arbor)

Peaking Lights - Space Primitive (Night People)

there was a version of this on tape too but the vinyl just looks so good (way better than the tape).

---

tapes

---

Baronic Wall - Traditional Appearance (Goaty Tapes)

jack is already on an entirely different plane from most human beings, and this (along with the Compass Rose tape on Ekhein from this year) is evidence that he is inching ever closer to something really transcendent. melted sci-fi blues bent around in funhouse mirrors. literally unlike any other music being made right now.

everything on Ekhein

everything on Agents of Chaos

just about everything on Jugular Forest

Copper Glove - Dead Space / No Power (Monorail Trespassing)

Perispirit - Abysmal Penetrations (Hospital Productions)

Lussuria - Silk and Honey (Hospital Productions)

---

mix

---

Bogdan Raczynski - Mix #2

the mixing itself isn't perfect, but that's part of what makes this thing so endearing. lands on plenty of touchstones from the past year but keeps things interesting with disco, reggae, and acid curveballs. dude's personality comes through, for sure.

2010: one

year end music list time.

some favorite tracks / singles from this past year (not all necessarily released this year)(now with links (where available / applicable)):

Andrea - "Retail Juke"

it figures that now that juke and footwork is worming into the dubstep crowd, the one footwork-type track i really like is not from chicago at all. it is so good though. "You Still Got Me," from earlier in the year, is also a winner.

Nicolas Makelberge - "Dying In Africa (Games Edit)"

a slowed version of this opens up a bleary-eyed mix from games, and it's elegant. the build at the midpoint is killer. usually a simple slow-down edit doesn't mean much to me, but it really works here. the normal-speed original is ace too.

Games - "Midi Drift"

hey, speaking of games...

Ellen Allien - "Pump"

her full length this year didn't do the trick for me but this track hits all the right notes and pulses in all the right places.

Baobinga & Cosmin TRG - "I Get Ruff"

Joe - "Claptrap" and
"Level Crossing"

these took a while to grow on me, as i don't typically care for tracks that are essentially just percussion, but the grooves landed on in both tracks are kind of impossible to turn down.

Kyle Hall - "Kaychunk" and "You Know What I Feel"

Richard Wagner - "Vorspiel" from Das Rheingold

Deerhunter - "Helicopter"

Space Opera - "Holy River" and "Over and Over"

Lone - "Pineapple Crush"

1958 - 2009 - II, Side B

yeah that does it for this part. if i have to think about whether or not i should include something too much, i probably shouldn't (and i should probably also get a life).

more soon.

"Are you righteous? Kind? Does your confidence lie in this? Are you loved by all? Know that I was, too. Do you imagine your suffering will be any less because you loved goodness and truth?"

"This great evil. Where's it come from? How'd it steal into the world? What seed, what root did it grow from? Who's doin' this? Who's killin' us? Robbing us of life and light. Mockin' us with the sight of what we might've known. Does our ruin benefit the earth? Does it help the grass to grow, the sun to shine? Is this darkness in you, too? Have you passed through this night?"

"War don't ennoble men. It turns them into dogs... poisons the soul."

sorry to get all quotey, but this movie...
